World Jazz

The term “World Jazz” is relatively new although jazz musicians have been experimenting with the concept for quite some time – see “New Age Jazz” in Genres. It combines elements of ethnic folk music with the disciplines of jazz.

On this website for instance, one can hear Dave Liebman play what can only be called Bop lines on soprano saxophone over the tabla rhythms of Badel Roy. Many other musicians (see below) have either played jazz on foreign instruments in a jazz setting or played jazz on conventional instruments in an ethnic setting or various combinations of the above.
