Three decades of friendship and playing together in various groups haveresulted in 3Prime, a new trio formed by drummer Peter Donald, bassist Abraham Laboriel and pianist Tom Ranier.
3Prime’s performances include the Monterey Jazz Festival, the Playboy Jazz Festival at Pasadena, Jazz on a June Night at the John Anson Ford Theatre and prestigious club dates at the Jazz Bakery, Rocco’s and the Jazz Spot to name a few.
Peter Donald has worked with jazz greats Al Cohn – Zoot Sims, Phil Woods, Clark Terry, Joe Henderson, John Abercrombie and Danny Zeitlin. He toured and recorded with the big bands of Toshiko Akiyoshi – Lew Tabackin and the Bob Florence Limited Edition. Pop acts include: Helen Reddy, Olivia Newton-John and the late Peter Allen. As a Jazz educator, Peter’s credentials include eight years as head of the percussion program at the Grove School of Music. Peter’s distinguished career landed him a nine-year position with the internationally famed advertising agency Ogilvy& Mather. Currently, he is an active freelance commercial music producer as well as performer.
Abraham Laboriel was Peter Donaldís classmate at Berklee School of Music. Abraham Laboriel has played on over 3000 recordings and sound tracks, prompting Guitar Player Magazine to succinctly peg him as …the most widely used session bassist of our time. He has recorded with music’s creme de la creme including Stevie Wonder, Robbie Robertson, Joe Zawinul, George Benson, Barbara Streisand, Al Jarreau, Dave and Don Grusin, Elton John, Joe Sample, Dori Cayami, Quincy Jones, Justo Almario and Michael Jackson to name a few. He was also a founding member of the internationally acclaimed fusion groups Friendship and Koinonia.
Tom Ranier has established a reputation as a stellar jazzman in groups with George Coleman, Terry Gibbs/Buddy DeFranco Sextet, Dave Pike, Pete Christlieb and Lew Tabackin. He has co-led a group with Sherman Ferguson and bassist John Heard. Tom has also been a primary member of the Southern California
studio scene and can be heard on many film scores, TV soundtracks, albums and live appearances; the latest being with Barbara Streisand. He is also part of the jazz study program at UCLA and teaches jazz piano and jazz theory.
